[Miami, FL - April 1, 2006): Over twenty five years ago, Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) pushed for the
establishment of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Week in the mid of 1970s. This week was officially declared for
the first time by then President Jimmy Carter in 1978.
As the Asian Pacific American (APA) population has grown, recognizing APA contributions and history has taken
on greater significance. In 1992, Congress designated May of each year as "Asian Pacific American Heritage Month".
"Celebrating Decades of Pride, Partnerships and Progress" is the national theme for this year's Asian Pacific
American Heritage Month, a time to honor the contributions, heritage, and traditions of Asian and Pacific Islanders.
One of the reasons was chosen for this celebration was to pay tribute to the first Japanese immigrants, who came to
the United States in May, 1843.
To celebrate the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Organization of Chinese Americans - South Florida
Chapter (OCA-SFL) is proud to work, with local community, to present the eighth cultural series throughout South
Florida.
